Supporting separated children and young people seeking asylum

Supporting separated children and young people seeking asylum

An upcoming workshop aims to support social care practitioners responding to the care needs of separated children and young people seeking asylum.

This interactive session will explore:

  • What a young person’s journey through care looks like, and within this the impact of immigration legislation and how this interacts with children’s rights.
  • The role of the social worker, and the different organisations and processes that unaccompanied children and young people seeking asylum need to navigate.
  • What ‘care’ looks like from the perspective of young people; hearing what is important to them when they arrive in the UK, and throughout their journey in care.
  • What trauma-informed and rights-based practice looks like in this area of work.

This session is designed for social workers and other practitioners who work directly with unaccompanied asylum seeking or refugee children and young people, or practice supervisors who support those who do.

Learning Outcomes

  • Have a deeper understanding of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children’s needs, experiences, entitlements and journeys through care.
  • Have a deeper understanding of the context, values and assumptions that you bring to your practice.
  • Explore the ethical complexities of practicing in this area, particularly keeping unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people at the centre of practice and maintaining social work values and rights-based practice.
  • Understand how trauma-informed and rights-based practice can be applied in your practice and thinking.
