09:30 - 15:30 Thursday, 27 February 2025

Overview

At this years’ conference we want to mark ten years of the Care Act 2014, a landmark piece of legislation which was intended to modernise 21st century care and support. It consolidated existing law relating to adults with care needs, emphasised the importance of well-being and addressed the support needs of carers for the first time. But it was followed by an unprecedented ten years including massive political upheaval and global impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speakers from across the social care sector, local government and experts by experience will all be contributing to a thoughtful review of what changed for the better and some critical analysis of the limitations, challenges and future opportunities.

Talking points include:

  • Alternative perspectives from policy and practice on how the Care Act was developed and received back in 2014.
  • What implementation of the Care Act looked meant for different areas, and how the intended shift from risk management towards more strengths-based approaches manifested in reality.
  • Evidence that points to five key changes needed in social care in order to unlock an equitable future.
  • The aspirations for the next ten years, and the impact of technological and digital transformation.

Research in Practice will publish a new podcast and a blog detailing what it was like to be instrumental in the development and implementation of the Care Act over the last decade.
